A cross stitch chart app for Chromebook

Flossmark is a chart tracker that installs from Chrome on any Chromebook. It opens “Pattern Keeper compatible” PDF charts, marks stitches by tap, drag or keyboard, and works offline once it’s installed.

Why a web app suits a Chromebook

Some Chromebooks run Android apps from Google Play, and some don’t (school and work Chromebooks often have Play turned off). Android chart apps that do run can feel cramped in a laptop window. Flossmark is built for the browser, so it runs on every Chromebook and fits any window size, from a tablet-mode flip to a big external screen.

Installing it

  1. Open flossmark.onibaku.co.uk/app in Chrome.
  2. Choose the install icon at the right of the address bar, then Install.
  3. Flossmark appears in your launcher and opens in its own window, online or offline.

Using it without a touch screen

  • Trackpad: click or drag to mark, two-finger scroll to move, pinch to zoom.
  • Keyboard: arrow keys move a square cursor (Shift jumps ten), Space marks, plus and minus zoom, 0 fits the whole chart, Ctrl+Z undoes.
  • Mouse: click to mark, right-drag or Shift-drag to move, scroll wheel to zoom.

Pattern Keeper and Markup R-XP are established apps with features Flossmark doesn’t have yet (backstitch tracking, for one). If you’re on a device they support, they’re worth a look. Flossmark exists for the devices they don’t reach.

Questions

Where do my charts get saved?

In Chrome’s storage on the Chromebook. Nothing is uploaded. Use “Save a backup” to keep a copy in your Google Drive or Downloads.

Does it work on a school Chromebook?

Usually, yes. It runs in Chrome and needs no Play Store. If your school blocks installing web apps, it still works in a normal Chrome tab.
